When moving out of a place, it is important that you leave the place looking as you should. There are many aspects of the house which will need to be checked over, so it can be useful to have a look over them in a list form, to help you get your head around how and why you need to leave the house in the way that you do. This is a general guide to a courteous way to leave the place for the next owner, but you may well have other obligations in the contract that are individual to your move, in which case you should go by that rather than this guide!
For a start, you should think about the safety of the place. As you have been living in the house for so long, you will be used to the quirks that come with it, like the rack in the tile in the kitchen, or the raised floorboard in the living room that everyone except you trips over. These are dangerous things to have waiting around as booby traps, so it is essential that you can get them sorted as well as possible. If something can’t be fixed, then you need to make the next inhabitants aware of it before they move in. If you had your own light fittings in the place, then you will want to remove them. However, it is essential that the lights are working, so you need to provide bulb holders on at least a couple of the lights. On those that you do not, you should ensure that the wires are left taped, to ensure that they do not short circuit, nor that they can electrocute a passer by. In the event that you are doing a lot of electrical work in the house, ensure that you have a professional doing it for you, as otherwise you are more than likely to hurt yourself or mess it up somehow!
Aside from safety, it is important that you leave the place looking and feeling good as well. This is especially important if there is to be a quick change over, as the next owners don’t want to have to move in to your mess and dirt! Having the place professionally cleaned is essential, as moving in to a new house means that you will have a lot of sorting out to do anyway, and you wouldn’t want to be doing so in a dirty environment! The hope is that those leaving the place that you are moving in to have done the same for your new place, and have made it nice and clean for your items.
Remember tow rite down a list of anything that needs to be known about the place before you go, and leave your number so that the new owners can call with questions. You should let them know about when bins go out, what time the post man comes, and anything else that you think will mean that they have an easier time at first. The basic rule is that you should leave the place as you found it, but it is always nice to leave the place as ow wish to have found it, and whilst that may well mean a little more work on your part, it is great to be able to give something back to the people moving in to the house that you have enjoyed so well!
